KM Australia 2009: Initial thoughts

Just got back to Canberra tonight from KM Australia 2009, where I gave a presentation on KM strategy and tactics (slides will go up soon).

The overall quality of the presentations was very high. The highlights for me were the presentations by Leanne Fry (packed with practical information about her work at AMP), Dave Snowden (highly theoretical but bleeding-edge stuff as always), Lyndon Sharp (with an infectious enthusiasm about disintermediating the relationship between the Board of Studies and students), and Dale Chatwin (with a brave story about what has not gone right at the ABS with Communities of Practice).

As with most conferences, I found that much of the value really came through in the conversations and contacts made between the presentations. Having attended the KM for the Experienced Practitioner conference in February of this year, this was my second opportunity to meet many of the people I chat with online through actKM and other forums. This was great, because with the ice already broken I was much more at ease as part of the conference crowd. (I don't know how much this comes across when people meet me, but I'm not very good at small talk and don't generally do very well in large crowds.)

As well as catching up with people like Arthur Shelley, Matt Moore, and Andrew Ford, it was great to be able to relax in a social setting with people like Luke Naismith, Michelle Lambert, and the irrepressible Marie O'Brien. There were many other people that I met again or for the first time over the two days who made the days so worthwhile so please don't feel left out if I haven't mentioned you by name!

The conference triggered lots of interesting reflections on my part as well. I'll post more of these over the coming days.
